On the Hill, non-sectarian Oak Hall in Oak Road advertised 'Free Seats and No Collections' in the Caterham Free Press in 1894. Mission Halls near the Guards' Depot and Metropolitan Asylum had been established by St. Mary's and the Congregational churches.
In 1901 the Wesleyan Guard's Chaplain, the Rev. C.E.Mees, opened the modest Soldiers' Rooms at the corner of William Road.
Another Guards' Chaplain, Fr. Roe, was responsible for the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart.
